I. Definition and Raw Materials
A solid-wood pallet is a horizontal load-bearing platform made from natural, raw timber through processes such as cutting, drying, splicing, and nailing or bolting.
Commonly used wood types include pine (high load-bearing capacity, good toughness, and cost-effective), poplar (lightweight, suitable for single-use or short-distance handling), and hard mixed woods such as birch and elm (excellent static load performance, ideal for heavy-duty applications); alternatively, oak or teak may be selected for applications requiring防腐 (preservation).
Manufacturing process: Raw timber is kiln-dried to a moisture content of 8%–12% to prevent cracking and mold growth; export pallets must undergo IPPC international phytosanitary treatment (heat treatment at 132°C for ≥2 hours, or compliant fumigation) and be marked with the IPPC logo; structural configurations typically include “Chuan”-shaped, “Tian”-shaped, “Ri”-shaped, and longitudinal-beam designs.
Standard dimensions: internationally mainstream sizes are 1200×1000 mm (European standard) and 1219×1016 mm (American standard); the commonly used domestic size is 1100×1100 mm, with custom sizes available upon request.
II. Main Categories
By structure
Single-sided pallet: cargo is loaded on one side, suitable for shelving / not for stacking;
Double-sided pallet: capable of bearing loads on both sides, suitable for multi-level stacking and two-way handling;
“Chuan”-shaped and “Tian”-shaped bases: The “Chuan”-shaped design is suitable for four-way forklift entry, while the “Tian”-shaped design offers higher static load capacity and is ideal for ground-level stacking.
By payload capacity: light-duty (dynamic load < 500 kg, e-commerce small parcels), medium-duty (500–1,000 kg, food / home appliances), and heavy-duty (dynamic load ≥ 1,000 kg, static load up to 3 tons or more, machinery / steel).
By application: reusable pallets (for circular reuse and repair), single-use export pallets (cost-driven), and anti-slip/anti-moisture pallets (for special operating conditions).
III. Advantages and Disadvantages
Advantages
High load-bearing capacity, excellent rigidity, impact resistance, and simple repair (simply replace a single wood panel);
The raw materials are readily available, and the cost is lower than that of plastic or metal pallets.
Natural and environmentally friendly, recyclable and biodegradable, in line with the principles of sustainability;
Excellent temperature adaptability, with resistance to both high and low temperatures, making it suitable for a wide range of applications.
Disadvantages
Prone to being affected by temperature and humidity; in humid environments, it is susceptible to mold growth and corrosion.
Its heavier weight increases fuel consumption during transportation compared with plastic pallets;
Export requires additional IPPC treatment, increasing costs;
Service life is highly dependent on environmental conditions; typically, it lasts for 50–100 cycles (which can be extended with proper maintenance).
IV. Performance Parameters
Standard medium-sized pallet: dynamic load capacity approximately 1.5 tonnes, static load capacity approximately 3 tonnes;
Heavy-duty hardwood pallets: static load capacity of 4–5 tonnes;
Maintaining a moisture content of 8%–12% is key to ensuring stability.
