I. Definition, Raw Materials, and Process
Raw materials: Thin veneers sliced from solid logs of poplar, pine, eucalyptus, and other species are cross-laminated in an odd number of layers (3, 5, or 7) and bonded with phenolic or eco-friendly urea-formaldehyde adhesives under high temperature and high pressure (typically above 100°C and under high-pressure hot pressing). The manufacturing process itself achieves thorough biological deactivation, eliminating the need for chemical fumigation with methyl bromide or other agents.
Structural configuration: mainstream designs include “Chuan”-shaped, “Tian”-shaped, and “Ri”-shaped bases, with options for single-sided or double-sided construction; standard dimensions are 1200×1000 mm (European standard), 1219×1016 mm (American standard), and 1100×1100 mm (Chinese national standard), with custom sizes available upon request; panel thickness typically ranges from 12 to 18 mm, reinforced with hot-dip galvanized nails or snap fasteners.
Compliance marking: ISPM 15 explicitly exempts fumigation; finished products may bear the HT (heat treatment) mark, eliminating the need to obtain a separate fumigation certificate. However, some countries require suppliers to provide material certification.
II. Main Categories
By structure: single-sided (shelf-style, no stacking), double-sided (two-way pallet flow, multi-level stacking), “chuan”-shaped base (four-way fork entry, high efficiency), and “tian”-shaped base (high static load capacity, stable ground stacking).
By load capacity: light-duty (dynamic load < 500 kg, e-commerce small parcels), medium-duty (500–1,000 kg, food/electronics), heavy-duty (dynamic load ≥ 1,000 kg, static load up to 3 tons or more, suitable for mechanical components);
By surface treatment: plain, anti-slip textured, waterproof coating (for maritime moisture protection), and laminated (for pharmaceutical/cleanroom applications).
III. Advantages and Disadvantages
Advantages
Fumigation-free export, faster customs clearance: eliminates fumigation fees and a 3–7 day processing window, while avoiding return shipments from the port of destination due to quarantine issues.
High stability: the cross-laminated structure exhibits virtually no warping or cracking, maintains a uniform moisture content of 8%–12%, and is free of knots and insect holes.
Moderate self-weight: 15%–20% lighter than solid wood pallets, reducing fuel consumption during transportation;
Neat and uniform appearance: ideal for industries that place high value on the aesthetic appeal of packaging, such as food, electronics, and pharmaceuticals.
Disadvantages
Irreparability: Once a panel is damaged, it usually needs to be replaced as a whole, unlike solid-wood pallets, which allow for individual board replacements.
Extreme heavy loads are inferior to hardwood pallets: in ultra-heavy-duty applications (static load of 5 tons or more), they perform worse than mixed hardwood pallets.
Prolonged immersion can cause delamination; when moisture resistance is required, an additional waterproof coating is necessary.
IV. Performance Parameters and Applicable Scenarios
Standard specifications: medium-duty pallets have a dynamic load capacity of 1 ton and a static load capacity of 3 tons; heavy-duty pallets can handle a dynamic load of 1.5 tons and a static load of 4 tons; moisture content ranges from 8% to 12%.
