- Commodity name: Double-sided solid wood pallet
I. Definition and Structural Characteristics
A double-sided solid-wood pallet is made from natural, unprocessed timber, with fully decked top and bottom surfaces that can both support loads. Unlike single-sided pallets, which are load-bearing only on the top surface, this type features a symmetrical (or equivalently load-bearing) front-and-back design, allows for four-way or two-way fork entry, and is well suited for multi-level stacking, reusable circulation, and automated storage and retrieval systems.
Standard process: selection of raw timber → drying (moisture content ≤12–15%) → IPPC heat treatment/fumigation (required for export) → cutting, jointing, nailing/bolting for reinforcement → inspection, labeling, and shipment.
Common national standard dimensions: 1200×1000 mm and 1100×1100 mm; structural options include “field”-shaped bases, “river”-shaped bases, and square pedestal bases, all of which ensure that both the top and bottom surfaces are flat and usable.
Pros and cons
Advantages: Dual-sided, reversible design extends service life by approximately 30–50% compared with single-sided pallets; exceptional stacking stability with even load distribution across all layers; four-way entry for compatibility with a wide range of forklifts and AGVs; solid wood construction offers excellent impact resistance, is repairable, and recyclable; highly customizable.
Disadvantages: The self-weight is 15–30% higher than that of single-faced pallets, increasing fuel consumption and transportation costs; the procurement and processing costs of solid wood are higher than those of plywood or plastic pallets; export requires IPPC certification and the application of the required marking; untreated wood is prone to moisture absorption and mold growth.
IV. Selection of Mainstream Materials
Pine (white pine and red pine): cost-effective, easy to work with, and highly resilient—making it ideal for logistics pallets.
Hard mixed woods (oak, beech, and birch): high strength and excellent wear resistance, making them suitable for heavy loads and high-frequency handling; however, they are costly.
Poplar: Lightweight and inexpensive, suitable for light-duty and single-use or short-term applications.
V. Applicable Scenarios and Industries
Manufacturing: automated storage and retrieval systems for automotive parts, machinery and equipment, and electronic production lines, as well as inter-facility material handling.
Cold chain / Food: multi-tier stacking and frequent inbound/outbound warehousing;
Export trade: Stacking within maritime shipping containers for cross-border goods requiring IPPC marking;
Third-party logistics: a highly reusable shared pallet pool.
VI. Key Selection and Compliance Considerations
Clearly define the three parameters: dynamic load, static load, and shelf load; in shelving applications, prioritize models equipped with steel tubes.
Export pallets must be sourced from manufacturers accredited by the IPPC, with requests for heat treatment/fumigation certificates and verification of the IPPC marking on the pallets (e.g., HT for heat treatment).
Control the wood moisture content to 12–14% to prevent subsequent warping and cracking.
Prioritize four-way entry for improved forklift operational efficiency; chamfer the edges.
