Solid wood pallets: made from pine, poplar, larch, and other species; high load-bearing capacity (static load up to 3 tons or more); moderate cost; for export, they must undergo ISPM 15 heat treatment (HT) or fumigation, with moisture content controlled at 12%–18% to prevent warping and mold; suitable for heavy cargo and long-term handling.
Plywood/Multi-ply board base panels: constructed by cross-bonding 3–7 layers of veneer, fumigation-free, with excellent resistance to deformation and approximately 30% lighter than solid wood; suitable for export and high-frequency handling, with a load-bearing capacity slightly lower than that of solid wood (typically 1–1.5 tons per square meter).
LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber) Pallets: dimensionally stable, with grain running in the same direction, offering excellent stability—ideal for automated warehousing and high-load applications.
II. Structure and Standard Specifications
Common structures: solid flat panels, strip-panel splicing, and “chuan”-shaped or “tian”-shaped base supports;
Standard Chinese dimensions: 1200×1000 mm and 1100×1100 mm; European EPAL standard: 1200×800 mm; typical thickness: 18–25 mm.
Fork entry direction: two-way or four-way fork entry, compatible with forklifts and manual hydraulic trucks;
Phytosanitary requirements: Exports must comply with ISPM 15 and bear the IPPC mark (heat treatment—HT—takes precedence over methyl bromide fumigation—MB).
III. Functions and Application Scenarios
Distribute pressure: Prevent goods or pallets from pressing directly against the floor or underlying cargo to avoid deformation and damage.
Moisture-proof ventilation: Elevate goods to isolate them from ground moisture, particularly in warehouses, shipping containers, and open-air storage yards.
Unitized operations: Utilize pallets for containerization, forklift handling, and shelf stacking to enhance logistics efficiency.
Applicable industries: machinery manufacturing, building materials, food, electronics, chemicals, cross-border e-commerce exports, and more.
IV. Key Considerations for Selection and Cost
Selection based on dynamic load / static load / rack load: for example, a warehouse with a static load capacity of 3 tonnes and a forklift with a dynamic load capacity of 1.5 tonnes;
For export applications, opt for fumigation-free plywood/LVL to eliminate the quarantine process.
Moisture content should be controlled between 8% and 14%; higher levels can easily lead to mold growth and deformation.
Price range: Solid wood pallets (HT) cost approximately RMB 30–60 per piece, while fumigation-free plywood costs approximately RMB 40–80 per piece, depending on size, thickness, and material.
V. Maintenance and Environmental Recycling
Avoid prolonged exposure to rain and water; regularly inspect for loose nails and cracked boards.
Scrapped shims can be crushed and reprocessed into particleboard and biomass fuel, aligning with environmentally friendly recycling practices.
The use of wooden pallets containing heavy-metal-based preservatives on surfaces that come into direct contact with food is strictly prohibited.
